What’s inside
Full disclosure
Thiamin 50 contains 3 active ingredients. Thiamine (also called vitamin B1) is the primary one — it's an essential nutrient your body needs to convert food into energy and keep your nerves and heart working properly.
The other two actives, Superoxide Dismutase and Catalase, are enzymes; their roles in this formula aren't detailed in our data. You'll also find standard inactive ingredients like gelatin (the capsule), glycerin, and water.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Thiamine is effective for treating thiamine deficiency and Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, a serious neurological condition from severe thiamine shortage. It's rated possibly effective for dysmenorrhea (period pain), though the evidence is less clear.
For mosquito repellent and heart failure, the evidence suggests it's possibly ineffective. We don't have effectiveness data for Superoxide Dismutase or Catalase in our monographs.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Thiamine is generally very safe when taken by mouth at normal doses. Rarely, it can cause skin reactions (dermatitis) or other allergic reactions — though when given by injection, anaphylactic shock is possible (also uncommon).
Thiamine is a nutrient your body needs during pregnancy and breastfeeding; if you're pregnant or nursing and want to take a supplement, use only the dose your doctor or midwife recommends.
Meds to double-check
Minor interactions only
Check this product against trimethoprim (Proloprim) if you take it for infection — it may raise how much thiamine stays in your blood. We have no interaction data for the other two active ingredients, so if you're on any medications, use the search tool below to be sure.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with clinical evidence supporting its stated purpose. Only minor medication interactions are documented, and safety information is well characterized.
This is a straightforward thiamine supplement, useful if you're deficient in B1 or recovering from alcohol-related thiamine problems. If you take trimethoprim for a bacterial infection, flagging it with your pharmacist is worth a minute.
