SuperSmart TMG contains one active ingredient: betaine anhydrous, a compound your body naturally makes and that you also get from food sources like beets and spinach. Betaine plays a role in supporting cellular function and homocysteine metabolism — it helps break down an amino acid called homocysteine.
The tablet also contains acacia gum as an inactive ingredient (a binder).
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Betaine anhydrous is effective for homocystinuria (a genetic disorder affecting how your body processes the amino acid homocysteine). It's possibly effective for lowering elevated homocysteine levels (hyperhomocysteinemia) in people without that genetic condition.
For other uses listed — including fatty liver disease (NASH), colorectal adenoma risk, depression, and acid reflux — the evidence isn't strong enough yet to establish whether it works. Talk with your doctor about what you're hoping this supplement will do for you.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Betaine anhydrous is generally well tolerated at the doses studied. The most common side effects are body odor, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, stomach upset, and elevated cholesterol levels.
Cerebral edema (brain swelling) is a rare serious side effect. There isn't enough reliable safety data to know whether it's safe in pregnancy — talk with your doctor or midwife before using it if you're pregnant.
Safety while breastfeeding isn't well established, so caution is advised if you're nursing.
