Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: wildcrafted Tongkat Ali, a dried root liquid extract from Eurycoma longifolia. Tongkat Ali has been traditionally used to support sexual function and male vitality.

The extract is prepared using a menstruum (the liquid used to make herbal extracts), which serves as the carrier for the active compounds.

Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed

This product doesn't appear to be marketed for a specific use, so we graded Eurycoma Longifolia's overall clinical evidence instead.

Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports Eurycoma Longifolia for:

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.
  • Since the label doesn't commit to one use, we graded the ingredient's overall clinical evidence instead.
  • On file: Sexual desire — rated "Possibly Effective" (Natural Medicines).

The evidence strongest for Tongkat Ali is for sexual desire, where it's rated possibly effective based on available research. For athletic performance, the evidence suggests it's possibly ineffective.

The data we hold doesn't establish reliable evidence for its use in back pain, osteoporosis, or diabetes—we just don't have enough solid research to say whether it works for those.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Tongkat Ali is generally well tolerated in short-term studies, but long-term safety and product quality consistency aren't well established. The adverse effects of most concern relate to testosterone: if Tongkat Ali raises your testosterone levels beyond the normal range, you could develop acne, insulin resistance, liver stress, and other testosterone-related side effects.

Avoid this product during pregnancy—there isn't enough safety data. Also avoid it while breastfeeding for the same reason: there's no reliable safety information.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Eurycoma Longifolia.

Before taking this product, double-check with your pharmacist if you take propranolol (Inderal) or any beta-blocker—Tongkat Ali can reduce how well they work. Also flag any medications metabolized by your liver's CYP1A2, CYP2C19, or CYP2A6 enzymes, or any testosterone supplement or prescription testosterone.

Propranolol (Inderal)

Eurycoma longifolia can reduce the levels and clinical effects of propranolol.
A small clinical study in healthy persons shows that taking a single dose of a water-based Eurycoma longifolia extract 200 mg, in combination with a single dose of propranolol 80 mg, reduces the propranolol area under the curve (AUC) by 29%, reduces the peak concentration by 42%, and increases time to peak concentration by 86% when compared with control. Since the elimination half-life of propranolol did not change, it seems that Eurycoma longifolia alters the kinetics of propranolol by decreasing its absorption in the gut, and not by altering its metabolism. It is not known if separating administration will prevent this interaction.

Likelihood Probable Evidence A
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates

Theoretically, Eurycoma longifolia might increase levels CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that methanolic Eurycoma longifolia root extract weakly inhibits CYP1A2 enzymes. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Cytochrome P450 2A6 (Cyp2A6) Substrates

Theoretically, Eurycoma longifolia might increase levels of CYP2A6 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that methanolic Eurycoma longifolia root extract weakly inhibits CYP2A6 enzymes. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Cytochrome P450 2C19 (Cyp2C19) Substrates

Theoretically, Eurycoma longifolia might increase levels of CYP2C19 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that methanolic Eurycoma longifolia root extract weakly inhibits CYP2C19 enzymes. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Testosterone

Theoretically, Eurycoma longifolia may further increase levels of testosterone.
A clinical study in aging males with testosterone levels below 300 ng/dL shows that taking a specific water extract of Eurycoma longifolia roots (Physta; Biotropics Malaysia) 100-200 mg daily with breakfast for 12 weeks increases total testosterone levels by 8% to 11% when compared with placebo. It is unclear whether this increase would occur in individuals with normal testosterone levels.

Tongkat Ali by Herbal Terra: Common Questions

Does Tongkat Ali by Herbal Terra interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Tongkat Ali has a known interaction with 248 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Tongkat Ali contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Will Tongkat Ali help with sexual desire?
The evidence we have rates it possibly effective for sexual desire, so there's some research backing it—but it's not a guarantee for everyone. Your mileage may vary.
Can I take this while pregnant or breastfeeding?
No. There isn't enough safety data during pregnancy, and the possible hormonal effects make it risky. While breastfeeding, there's no reliable safety information either, so it's best to avoid it. Talk with your doctor if you're considering it.
Does this product raise testosterone?
Research shows it may increase testosterone levels, especially in men with low baseline levels. If your testosterone goes above the normal range, you could develop acne, insulin resistance, liver stress, or other side effects. That's why checking with your pharmacist first is important.
What are the side effects?
Short-term studies show it's generally well tolerated. The main concern is testosterone-related effects—acne, insulin resistance, and liver stress—if levels climb too high. Long-term safety isn't well studied.
Is this product safe long-term?
We don't have solid long-term safety data, and product quality between brands can vary. Use it short-term and talk with your pharmacist about how long it's safe for you specifically.
How does Tongkat Ali interact with my medications?
The biggest concern is propranolol—this product can reduce how well it works. It also may affect how your liver processes certain medications. Use the search tool with your exact drug names to be sure.
