Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: wildcrafted Eurycoma longifolia (Tongkat Ali) dried root as a liquid extract. The extract is made using a menstruum — a liquid solvent used to pull the plant's active compounds into a form you can swallow.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed

This product doesn't appear to be marketed for a specific use, so we graded Eurycoma Longifolia's overall clinical evidence instead.

Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports Eurycoma Longifolia for:

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.
  • Since the label doesn't commit to one use, we graded the ingredient's overall clinical evidence instead.
  • On file: Sexual desire — rated "Possibly Effective" (Natural Medicines).

The evidence supports Tongkat Ali for sexual desire, where it's rated possibly effective based on available research. For athletic performance, the data suggests it's possibly ineffective.

The evidence on back pain, osteoporosis, and diabetes isn't established enough to rate — we simply don't have reliable data to say whether it works for these.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data

Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Tongkat Ali is generally well tolerated in short-term studies, but long-term safety and the quality of different products haven't been thoroughly studied. Because the herb may raise testosterone levels beyond normal, there's a risk of testosterone-related side effects — acne, insulin resistance, and liver stress among them.

The safety data advises against use during pregnancy and while breastfeeding due to insufficient information and possible hormonal effects.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Eurycoma Longifolia.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • For scale: 248 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

If you take propranolol (Inderal) or any other beta blocker for your heart or blood pressure, this is a Moderate concern — the herb can reduce how well propranolol works. You should also check with your pharmacist or doctor if you take any medication that's processed by your liver, particularly those broken down by CYP1A2, CYP2C19, or CYP2A6 enzymes, or if you're using testosterone replacement therapy.

These are Minor theoretical risks, but they're worth confirming before you begin.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

Tongkat Ali may be worth considering if you're interested in its possibly effective use for sexual desire, but it's not established for other common uses. If you take propranolol or any other regular medication, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before adding this — the interaction with propranolol is real and can reduce how well it works.

The long-term picture isn't clear, so it's worth discussing with your own healthcare provider before you start.

Propranolol (Inderal)

Eurycoma longifolia can reduce the levels and clinical effects of propranolol.
A small clinical study in healthy persons shows that taking a single dose of a water-based Eurycoma longifolia extract 200 mg, in combination with a single dose of propranolol 80 mg, reduces the propranolol area under the curve (AUC) by 29%, reduces the peak concentration by 42%, and increases time to peak concentration by 86% when compared with control. Since the elimination half-life of propranolol did not change, it seems that Eurycoma longifolia alters the kinetics of propranolol by decreasing its absorption in the gut, and not by altering its metabolism. It is not known if separating administration will prevent this interaction.

Likelihood Probable Evidence A
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates

Theoretically, Eurycoma longifolia might increase levels CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that methanolic Eurycoma longifolia root extract weakly inhibits CYP1A2 enzymes. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Cytochrome P450 2A6 (Cyp2A6) Substrates

Theoretically, Eurycoma longifolia might increase levels of CYP2A6 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that methanolic Eurycoma longifolia root extract weakly inhibits CYP2A6 enzymes. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Cytochrome P450 2C19 (Cyp2C19) Substrates

Theoretically, Eurycoma longifolia might increase levels of CYP2C19 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that methanolic Eurycoma longifolia root extract weakly inhibits CYP2C19 enzymes. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Testosterone

Theoretically, Eurycoma longifolia may further increase levels of testosterone.
A clinical study in aging males with testosterone levels below 300 ng/dL shows that taking a specific water extract of Eurycoma longifolia roots (Physta; Biotropics Malaysia) 100-200 mg daily with breakfast for 12 weeks increases total testosterone levels by 8% to 11% when compared with placebo. It is unclear whether this increase would occur in individuals with normal testosterone levels.

Tongkat Ali by Herbal Terra: Common Questions

Does Tongkat Ali by Herbal Terra interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Tongkat Ali has a known interaction with 248 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Tongkat Ali contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
What is Tongkat Ali used for?
The evidence best supports Tongkat Ali for sexual desire, where research rates it possibly effective. For athletic performance, the available data suggests it doesn't help. Other uses like back pain, osteoporosis, and diabetes don't have enough reliable evidence to know either way.
Can I take this if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
The safety data advises against it in both cases. During pregnancy, there isn't enough information and the herb may affect hormones. While breastfeeding, there's no reliable safety information, so it's best avoided. Talk with your doctor or midwife if you're considering it.
What are the side effects?
In short-term studies, it's generally well tolerated. However, because Tongkat Ali may raise testosterone levels, if yours go beyond normal range you could experience testosterone-related side effects — acne, insulin resistance, and liver stress have been reported.
Is long-term use safe?
Long-term safety hasn't been well studied, so we don't have solid data on what happens if you take it for months or years. Product quality can also vary. It's worth discussing long-term use with your doctor or pharmacist.
Does this product have any fillers?
The only inactive ingredient listed is menstruum, which is the liquid solvent used to make the extract.
Will this affect my blood pressure medication?
If you take propranolol (Inderal), yes — the herb can reduce its effectiveness by about 29%. Other blood pressure or heart medications may also be affected. Check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.
