Iodine is well tolerated when you stay within normal dietary amounts and don't exceed the upper safe limit. At high doses, though, it can cause thyroid problems—either overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) or underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism)—as well as nausea, diarrhea, headache, a metallic taste, or a swollen thyroid (goiter).

In pregnancy, iodine is needed but only in the right amount; avoid high-dose products and use only what your doctor recommends. Some iodine passes into breast milk, so again, follow medical guidance.

Rarely, people can have hypersensitivity reactions to iodine when taken by mouth, with symptoms like hives, swelling, fever, or bleeding.

Combining iodine with amiodarone might cause excessively high iodine levels.
Amiodarone contains 37.3% iodine and can increase iodine levels. Concomitant use with iodine might increase the risk of having excessive iodine levels and adversely affecting thyroid function. Monitor thyroid function.

Antithyroid Drugs

Iodine might alter the effects of antithyroid drugs.
Iodine in high doses has been reported to cause both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, depending on the individual's past medical history. Taking iodine while using antithyroid drugs could alter the effects of the antithyroid drugs.
