Myrrh is generally well tolerated for short-term use, though oral safety is not well studied. The most common side effect is diarrhea at higher doses (2–4 grams), and topical use may cause skin irritation.

Guggul is generally well tolerated orally, with the most common side effects being belching, bloating, diarrhea, headache, nausea, and unpleasant taste; skin reactions occur in a dose-dependent manner (3% at lower doses, up to 15% at higher doses). Garcinia appears well tolerated short-term, with common effects including diarrhea, gastrointestinal discomfort, headache, and nausea; rare reports of liver injury, heart inflammation, and mania warrant caution.

Both myrrh and guggul carry safety warnings against use during pregnancy — myrrh is traditionally said to stimulate the uterus, and guggul safety is not established in pregnancy. Guggul is also best avoided while breastfeeding due to insufficient safety data.
