Lactobacillus acidophilus and most of the other probiotics in this formula are generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. That said, there is a rare but documented concern: because these are live organisms, there have been isolated cases where they've caused serious infections like blood infection (bacteremia), sepsis, or infected heart valves—mostly in people who are critically ill or have severely weakened immune systems.

Oral side effects are uncommon but can include stomach discomfort, bloating, gas, diarrhea, or nausea when you first start. For pregnancy, Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum are rated possibly safe; Bifidobacterium longum and Bifidobacterium breve are rated possibly safe for both pregnancy and lactation.
