VeggieGest is a blend of 12 digestive enzymes designed to help break down plant-based foods. The three we have the most data on are protease (which breaks down protein), lipase (which breaks down fat), and lactase (which breaks down lactose in dairy).
The other nine—amylase, cellulase, invertase, glucoamylase, alpha-galactosidase, xylanase, maltase, hemicellulase, and pectinase—target different carbohydrates and fiber. The capsules also contain cellulose and water as inactive ingredients.

Strong evidence
Lactase in VeggieGest is rated effective for lactose intolerance. For the other digestive enzymes in the formula, the evidence for conditions like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) or dyspepsia (stomach upset) is insufficient to rate reliably.

How safe is it?

Protease, lipase, and lactase are generally well tolerated by most adults, though some people report mild digestive upset. Rarely, occupational or topical exposure to proteases has triggered allergic reactions like asthma or allergic rhinitis—this is uncommon with the supplement form.
