Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Vitamin B-1 100 mg contains one active ingredient: thiamine (also called vitamin B-1), a water-soluble B vitamin your body needs to turn food into energy and support nerve function. The tablet also contains inactive ingredients — microcrystalline cellulose, calcium phosphate, stearic acid, magnesium stearate, croscarmellose sodium, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, and silica — that help form and hold the tablet together.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Thiamine is effective for treating thiamine deficiency and Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, a serious condition caused by severe thiamine lack. It's possibly effective for dysmenorrhea (painful periods).
The evidence doesn't support its use as a mosquito repellent or for heart failure, and the data we hold rates it possibly ineffective for those purposes.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Thiamine is generally very well tolerated when taken by mouth in normal amounts. Rarely, it may cause skin reactions or allergic responses — injectable thiamine is also rarely associated with more serious allergic reactions, though this form is not in this product.
During pregnancy and breastfeeding, thiamine is needed; use supplement doses only as your doctor or pharmacist advises, since requirements change during these times.
Meds to double-check
Minor interactions only
If you take trimethoprim (Proloprim), an antibiotic used mainly for urinary tract infections, check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding this thiamine supplement — trimethoprim can raise thiamine levels in your blood.
The bottom line
