HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Water-Soluble Pumpkin Seed Extract by Life Extension
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: a water-soluble extract from pumpkin seeds (Cucurbita pepo). The capsule also includes inactive ingredients — rice flour, vegetable cellulose, maltodextrin, stearic acid, vegetable stearate, and silica — which are fillers, binders, and capsule material.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence supports pumpkin seed extract as possibly effective for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), the non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland that can cause urinary symptoms in older men. For other uses — male pattern baldness (androgenic alopecia), interstitial cystitis (bladder pain), intestinal parasite infection, and urinary tract infections — the evidence is insufficient to rate whether it works.
That doesn't mean it doesn't; it means we don't have enough reliable data to say.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Pumpkin as food is generally well tolerated. When taken as a concentrated supplement, most people experience no problems, though some have reported mild abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting in trials.
Anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction) is rare but has been reported. There are also rare case reports of temporary hair loss after consuming high-cucurbitacin pumpkin or squash products — this appears linked to a bitter taste and wild varieties rather than typical cultivated pumpkins.
During pregnancy, there isn't enough safety data on concentrated pumpkin seed supplements to know either way; talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice. The same applies to breastfeeding — safety data is limited, so check with your healthcare provider before using.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check this product against lithium before you take it. Pumpkin extract may reduce lithium clearance and raise its blood level, which could require a dose adjustment.
No other drug interactions are documented in our data for this ingredient.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
If you have benign prostatic hyperplasia and are not taking lithium, this extract is worth discussing with your pharmacist. If you take lithium, do not start this product without checking with your doctor first — the interaction is real and dose-sensitive.
For other conditions, the evidence is too thin to promise results.

General Statements
for Longer Life
Aging individuals frequently encounter a weakening of the bladder and its sphincter muscle that controls the release of urine. Laboratory and human clinical studies demonstrate that ingestion of water-soluble pumpkin seed extract can significantly improve the structural support of the bladder and the function of the sphincter muscle.58-62 Clinical studies on women and men have used capsules containing 262 mg of water-soluble pumpkin seed extract an 50 mg of soy isoflavones taken two times each day. The results from human studies show the maximum benefits occurring after six to eight weeks of continued use.60-62 The data supporting the value of water-soluble pumpkin seed extract is particularly strong in studies performed in women. A clinical study of aging men also demonstrated positive results.62 The pumpkin seed has a long history of use in helping to maintain healthy bladder function. Japanese scientists have patented a method to obtain the water-soluble constituents of the pumpkin seed, which are absorbed far more efficiently into the bloodstream. These water-soluble pumpkin seed extracts appear to be the active constituents that help with the urinary discomforts endured by so many maturing women and men.
