Yarrow seems to be well tolerated when taken by mouth or used inside the vagina. Topically (on the skin), it can cause allergic or irritant skin reactions—including dermatitis, hives, and sensitivity to sunlight—because of compounds called sesquiterpene lactones.

Handling the dried flowers has also triggered respiratory symptoms in at least one person. The safety data are limited and allergic reactions can occur.
