Perilla is generally well tolerated when used as a food, but supplement-strength products haven't been studied thoroughly. The main concern we know about is a rare but serious risk: anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction) has been reported in people who consumed perilla seeds.
There's also a small chance of dermatitis (skin irritation) if applied to skin, and occupational asthma has been reported from inhaling smoke from roasted perilla seeds. Because safety data in pregnancy and breastfeeding is lacking, the safety data advises against medicinal amounts during these times.
