Answer
Hello! Thanks for reaching out with your question about using expired Emgality.
Manufacturers assign expiration dates based on extensive studies and testing to ensure that medications retain their full potency and safety when stored correctly. Once a medication is past its expiration date, we can’t be 100% sure it will work as intended.
While most medications don’t suddenly become harmful after they expire, their effectiveness might decrease over time.
In the case of Emgality, being only three days past its expiration date means it’s unlikely that the medication has degraded significantly or turned into anything harmful. However, the real concern is that the drug may not be as potent as it once was, which could mean the treatment won’t work as effectively as it should.
Unfortunately, expired medications usually don’t show any obvious signs of degradation. Unlike something like expired aspirin—which might develop a vinegar-like smell—most drugs won’t give you any clear indication that they’ve lost potency. Just by looking at your Emgality, you generally won’t be able to tell if it has degraded or lost effectiveness.
In most cases, it’s best to discard expired medications and obtain a new prescription for a product that is still within its expiration date to ensure both safety and effectiveness.
