Children's Motrin With Hyland's Cold & Cough
In our latest question and answer, our pharmacist discusses combining Children's Motrin With Hyland's Cold and Cough.

Question
Hello! I was wondering if it is safe to use Hyland's kids cold and cough daytime (congestion, runny nose, sore throat, cough, post nasal drip) and Motrin together. I believe Motrin is just ibuprofen but I wanted to double-check before I gave both together. I gave my son Hyland's cold and cough at 11 am.

Answer!
Hi there! Thanks for contacting us!
This type of question has come up a lot recently (it must be cold and flu season!) and it's actually one we have answered in the past. You can find that answer right here on our site.
Also, to clarify your question about what is in Motrin, yes, the active ingredient is ibuprofen, as shown on the 'Drug Facts' label for the product:
To summarize the answer I had given before regarding combining Motrin and Hyland's products, there is no known interaction and they are considered safe to take together.
Hyland's kids cold and cough is a homeopathic medicine, and most of these types of products are safe to use with other drugs. You can see the active ingredients in the product below.
Homeopathy is a form of alternative medicine that uses tiny amounts of natural substances that can cause similar symptoms in a healthy person to treat those same symptoms in someone who is sick. One example is using a small dose of onion extract (noted as allium cepa on the above label) to treat a runny nose.
Most of the time, homeopathic medicines don't have appreciable amounts of active ingredients in them, certainly less than would cause interaction in most cases, so they're usually safe in regard to drug interactions.
I looked specifically into Hyland's Naturals products, and I couldn't find any that would interact with ibuprofen, so in general, they are safe to use together.
