Answer
Thank you for reaching out!
Our drug-herbal interaction checker does list an interaction between hawthorn and Eliquis (apixaban) because hawthorn has been linked to antiplatelet effects. Theoretically, taking Eliquis and hawthorn together may increase the risk of bleeding due to their additive effects.
Further Details
Research in labs and with animals shows that hawthorn extract may inhibit platelet aggregation, which is the clumping together of platelets that forms blood clots.
This mechanism is thought to be due to hawthorn inhibiting the synthesis of thromboxane A2, a compound that stimulates platelet aggregation.
However, it is important to point out that studies in humans have shown conflicting results regarding real-world effects.
One observational study found that people who took hawthorn shortly before cardiovascular surgery had a 9% higher incidence of postoperative bleeding compared to those who never consumed hawthorn.
On the other hand, another study using a preparation of dried hawthorn leaves and flowers (Crataesor by Soria Natural Lab) at a dose of 800 mg three times daily for 15 days did not affect platelet aggregation or levels of thromboxane B2 (a metabolite of thromboxane A2) in healthy humans.
These conflicting results may be due to variations in the species of hawthorn, the specific extracts used, and the dosages administered.
Recommendations
It is important to exercise caution when adding over-the-counter supplements to prescription medications, especially blood thinners like Eliquis.
As discussed above, there is conflicting information regarding whether hawthorn can affect bleeding, and further studies are needed to better understand the risks of taking hawthorn supplements with Eliquis or any blood thinner.
I strongly recommend that you speak with your doctor before starting hawthorn, as they know your medical situation best. They can monitor you and ensure that taking hawthorn is safe for you.
If you do take them together, be sure to monitor for any unusual bleeding or bruising and report any concerns to your doctor immediately.
Final Words
Thanks so much for reaching out, and feel free to check back in anytime. Also be sure to use our drug-herbal interaction checker to check hawthorn for additional interactions.
