Alendronate Sodium, Cholecalciferol falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Agar interacts with.

Agar forms a thick gel, which may disrupt the absorption of nutrients and medications. Animal research suggests that consuming a diet consisting of 5% to 10% agar alters the absorption of nutrients from the diet. In one study, consuming a diet composed of 10% agar reduced the absorption of all evaluated minerals. Theoretically, agar may also impair the absorption of oral drugs.

Here's the thing about Fosamax Plus D (alendronate with vitamin D): it is already a very poorly absorbed medication. Even on a good day, only a tiny fraction makes it into your body, which is exactly why the label tells you to take it on an empty stomach with plain water and to stay upright afterward. Anything thick or gel-like in your stomach can act as a barrier and soak up the drug before it gets absorbed.

Agar swells into a gel that may trap part of the alendronate, leaving you with even less than usual. That could mean weaker protection for your bones. This is a theoretical concern based mostly on animal studies, so don't panic, but to be safe, keep agar away from your weekly dose. Ask your pharmacist about timing.
