Dolomite and Alendronate Sodium, Cholecalciferol

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

BISPHOSPHONATES

Why this applies to Alendronate Sodium, Cholecalciferol

Alendronate Sodium, Cholecalciferol falls under BISPHOSPHONATES — the group Dolomite interacts with.

Theoretically, the calcium and magnesium in dolomite might decrease the absorption of bisphosphonates.
Cations, including calcium and magnesium, can decrease absorption of bisphosphonates. Advise patients to take bisphosphonates at least 30 minutes before dolomite, but preferably at a different time of day.

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing with Fosamax Plus D (alendronate with vitamin D): your body only absorbs a small amount of the alendronate to begin with, and it's very picky. If the calcium and magnesium from dolomite are floating around in your stomach at the same time, they can bind to the alendronate and block it from being absorbed. That means less of the medicine gets into your system to do its job of strengthening your bones.

This is based on how these minerals behave rather than hard clinical studies, so think of it as a sensible precaution. The simple fix is timing: take your alendronate first thing in the morning with plain water, then wait at least 30 to 60 minutes (ideally save the dolomite for later in the day). I'd also mention that dolomite can contain trace heavy metals, so ask your pharmacist whether a cleaner calcium or magnesium product makes more sense for you.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Alendronate Sodium, Cholecalciferol page

“Activated charcoal carries the only major rating against Fosamax Plus D (alendronate with cholecalciferol), and it deserves real respect from anyone taking this bone medicine. Charcoal soaks up drugs in the gut, so less alendronate ever reaches the skeleton it is supposed to strengthen.”

About Dolomite

What is Dolomite?

Dolomite
  • Source of calcium
  • Source of magnesium
  • Bone health support
  • Antacid for heartburn
  • Mineral supplementation

Dolomite is a natural mineral that provides both calcium and magnesium. However, many health authorities advise against using it because dolomite products have been found to contain heavy metals like lead, arsenic, and mercury, and safer, better-tested calcium and magnesium supplements are widely available.
