Ibandronate falls under BISPHOSPHONATES — the group Dolomite interacts with.

Theoretically, the calcium and magnesium in dolomite might decrease the absorption of bisphosphonates.
Cations, including calcium and magnesium, can decrease absorption of bisphosphonates. Advise patients to take bisphosphonates at least 30 minutes before dolomite, but preferably at a different time of day.

Here's the thing with Boniva (ibandronate): your body only absorbs a tiny fraction of each dose to begin with, and the calcium and magnesium in dolomite can grab onto the drug in your stomach and gut. When that happens, even less ibandronate makes it into your bloodstream, which can mean it doesn't protect your bones the way it should.

This isn't about new side effects, it's about the medicine quietly not working as well. The good news is this is easy to manage with timing. Ibandronate is already meant to be taken on an empty stomach first thing in the morning with plain water, then you wait before eating, drinking, or taking anything else. Keeping your dolomite for later in the day handles this nicely. If you're unsure, your pharmacist can map out the timing with you.

What Is Ibandronate Used For?

Brand names: Boniva, Boniva IV

Ibandronate sodium tablets (brands: Boniva, Ibandronate sodium) are approved for both the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. They increase bone mineral density (BMD) and reduce the risk of spinal fractures.

Ibandronate Sodium injection (given intravenously) is approved for the treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. It also increases bone mineral density and reduces the incidence of vertebral (spinal) fractures. The injection is not approved for prevention.
