Dolomite and Polythiazide, Prazosin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Major

THIAZIDE DIURETICS

Why this applies to Polythiazide, Prazosin

Polythiazide, Prazosin falls under THIAZIDE DIURETICS — the group Dolomite interacts with.

Taking thiazides with dolomite might increase the risk of hypercalcemia and kidney failure.
Dolomite contains calcium, and thiazides reduce calcium excretion by the kidneys. Using thiazides along with moderately large amounts of dolomite increases the risk of milk-alkali syndrome (hypercalcemia, metabolic alkalosis, kidney failure).
Severity Major Likelihood Probable Evidence C

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Minizide is a combination pill that contains polythiazide, a thiazide-type water pill, along with prazosin for blood pressure. The piece that matters here is the thiazide. Thiazides make your kidneys hold onto calcium instead of flushing it out. Dolomite, meanwhile, is a calcium and magnesium source. Stack the two together in larger amounts and your calcium can climb too high, which can lead to a problem called milk-alkali syndrome (high calcium, an upset acid balance, and even kidney trouble).

Warning signs of high calcium include nausea, constipation, feeling unusually thirsty, confusion, or weakness. On top of that, dolomite can carry heavy metals like lead, so it's not a supplement I'd recommend anyway. Please don't change your Minizide on your own. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before adding any calcium product.

About Dolomite

What is Dolomite?

Dolomite
  • Source of calcium
  • Source of magnesium
  • Bone health support
  • Antacid for heartburn
  • Mineral supplementation

Dolomite is a natural mineral that provides both calcium and magnesium. However, many health authorities advise against using it because dolomite products have been found to contain heavy metals like lead, arsenic, and mercury, and safer, better-tested calcium and magnesium supplements are widely available.
