Dolomite and Risedronate Sodium

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

BISPHOSPHONATES

Why this applies to Risedronate Sodium

Risedronate Sodium falls under BISPHOSPHONATES — the group Dolomite interacts with.

Theoretically, the calcium and magnesium in dolomite might decrease the absorption of bisphosphonates.
Cations, including calcium and magnesium, can decrease absorption of bisphosphonates. Advise patients to take bisphosphonates at least 30 minutes before dolomite, but preferably at a different time of day.

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing with risedronate (Actonel): your body only absorbs a tiny fraction of each dose to begin with, and that small amount is easily blocked by minerals. Dolomite is loaded with calcium and magnesium, and those minerals can grab onto risedronate in your stomach and keep it from getting into your bloodstream. The likely result isn't more side effects, it's less medicine working, which could mean weaker protection for your bones over time.

This concern is based on how these two behave together rather than hard studies, but it lines up with what we already know about bisphosphonates and any calcium or antacid product. The simple fix is timing. Take your risedronate first thing on an empty stomach with plain water, then wait at least 30 minutes (better yet, a different time of day) before dolomite. Honestly, given dolomite's heavy-metal concerns, ask your pharmacist about a cleaner calcium and magnesium option too.

About Dolomite

What is Dolomite?

Dolomite
  • Source of calcium
  • Source of magnesium
  • Bone health support
  • Antacid for heartburn
  • Mineral supplementation

Dolomite is a natural mineral that provides both calcium and magnesium. However, many health authorities advise against using it because dolomite products have been found to contain heavy metals like lead, arsenic, and mercury, and safer, better-tested calcium and magnesium supplements are widely available.
