Dolomite and Demeclocycline

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

TETRACYCLINE ANTIBIOTICS

Why this applies to Demeclocycline

Demeclocycline falls under TETRACYCLINE ANTIBIOTICS — the group Dolomite interacts with.

Theoretically, the calcium and magnesium in dolomite might decrease the absorption of tetracycline antibiotics.
Dolomite contains calcium and magnesium, which can bind to tetracyclines in the gut. To avoid this interaction, advise patients to take oral tetracyclines at least 2 hours before or 4-6 hours after dolomite.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence D

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: dolomite gives you calcium and magnesium, and both of those minerals love to grab onto antibiotics like demeclocycline while they're still in your stomach and gut. When they bind together, less of the antibiotic gets absorbed into your bloodstream. That means a weaker dose actually reaching the infection, which could leave the infection undertreated.

This concern is based on how these minerals behave rather than hard human studies, so think of it as a real but theoretical worry. The easy fix is timing. Take your demeclocycline at least 2 hours before, or 4 to 6 hours after, the dolomite. One more note: many pharmacists steer people away from dolomite anyway because it can carry traces of lead. Check with your pharmacist before combining them.

Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

About Dolomite

What is Dolomite?

Dolomite
  • Source of calcium
  • Source of magnesium
  • Bone health support
  • Antacid for heartburn
  • Mineral supplementation

Dolomite is a natural mineral that provides both calcium and magnesium.
