ORAL DRUGS
Why this applies to Canagliflozin, Metformin Hydrochloride
Canagliflozin, Metformin Hydrochloride falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Agar interacts with.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version: agar is a seaweed fiber that swells into a thick gel in your stomach. That gel can, in theory, trap part of a pill and keep it from being fully absorbed. With Invokamet XR (canagliflozin plus metformin), the worry would be slightly less drug getting into your system, which could mean your blood sugar isn't controlled as well as expected.
I want to be honest about how soft this concern is. It comes only from animal studies and pharmacology theory, not real human data with this medicine, and it's rated a minor interaction. Neither drug is a prodrug, so the direction is just reduced absorption, not stronger effects. To play it safe, take your Invokamet a couple of hours apart from any agar supplement, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding it.

About Agar
What is Agar?
- Constipation
- Weight loss
- Vegetarian gelatin substitute
- Source of dietary fiber
- Appetite control
Agar is a plant-based gel made from red seaweed that is widely used as a vegetarian alternative to gelatin and as a source of dietary fiber. It is sometimes taken as a bulk-forming laxative or weight-loss aid, but solid human evidence for these health uses is limited. It is generally considered safe as a food, but you should drink plenty of water with it and check with your pharmacist before using it as a supplement.
