Entrectinib falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Agar interacts with.

Agar forms a thick gel, which may disrupt the absorption of nutrients and medications. Animal research suggests that consuming a diet consisting of 5% to 10% agar alters the absorption of nutrients from the diet. In one study, consuming a diet composed of 10% agar reduced the absorption of all evaluated minerals. Theoretically, agar may also impair the absorption of oral drugs.

Here's the simple version: agar is a seaweed fiber that swells into a thick gel in your stomach and gut. The concern with Rozlytrek (entrectinib), which you swallow as a capsule, is that this gel could physically trap part of the pill and keep your body from fully soaking it up. If less gets absorbed, you may get less cancer-fighting benefit from each dose, and that's not something you want to risk with a medicine like this.

I'll be honest, this is a theoretical worry based mostly on pharmacology and animal feeding studies, not on people taking entrectinib. Food amounts of agar likely matter little, but concentrated fiber supplements are different. Please run it by your oncologist or pharmacist before adding any agar supplement.

What Is Entrectinib Used For?

Brand name: Rozlytrek

Rozlytrek (entrectinib) is used to treat adult patients with ROS1-positive metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), as confirmed by an FDA-approved test. It is also approved for adult and pediatric patients older than 1 month of age who have solid tumors — any cancer type — that carry an NTRK gene fusion detected by an FDA-approved test, provided the tumor has no known acquired resistance mutation, is metastatic or cannot be surgically removed without severe harm, and has progressed after prior treatment or has no satisfactory alternative therapy.

The NTRK gene fusion approval in solid tumors was granted under accelerated approval, meaning it is based on tumor response rates. Continued approval may depend on results from confirmatory clinical trials.
