Phenelzine Sulfate falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Agar interacts with.

Agar forms a thick gel, which may disrupt the absorption of nutrients and medications. Animal research suggests that consuming a diet consisting of 5% to 10% agar alters the absorption of nutrients from the diet. In one study, consuming a diet composed of 10% agar reduced the absorption of all evaluated minerals. Theoretically, agar may also impair the absorption of oral drugs.

Here's the short version on taking agar with your phenelzine (Nardil). Agar is a seaweed fiber that swells into a thick gel in your gut. In theory, that gel could trap part of an oral pill and keep your body from absorbing all of it. With phenelzine, getting less than your full dose could mean your depression isn't as well controlled.

I want to be honest about how soft this concern is. It comes only from animal feeding studies and basic pharmacology, not from real-world reports with phenelzine, so it's more of a 'just in case' than a proven problem. A simple fix is to separate them, taking your phenelzine a couple of hours apart from any agar supplement. Since phenelzine is a sensitive MAOI, please run this by your pharmacist or doctor first.

Phenelzine is used to treat depression — specifically the types described as atypical, nonendogenous, or neurotic depression. This often includes people who have a mix of anxiety and depression, or who have phobic or hypochondriacal features (strong fears about illness or physical symptoms).

It is generally not the first antidepressant a doctor will try. It is best suited for patients who have already tried other antidepressants without enough relief. There is less evidence supporting its use in severe depression with classic biological features (called endogenous depression).
