Phenelzine Sulfate falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group 1,4-butanediol interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of 1,4-butanediol with CNS depressants may potentiate respiratory and CNS depression.
1,4-Butanediol is metabolized to gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB). Concomitant use of CNS depressants with GHB may cause serious CNS and respiratory depression.

First, the most important thing: 1,4-butanediol is not a real supplement. It's a toxic industrial chemical that your body turns into GHB, a strong substance that slows down the brain and breathing. It should never be swallowed, period.

On top of that danger, mixing it with phenelzine (Nardil) makes things worse. Phenelzine is a sedating MAOI that already can cause drowsiness, dizziness, low blood pressure, and fainting. Layering GHB's heavy sedation on top can deepen that effect, leading to extreme sleepiness, slowed or stopped breathing, and loss of consciousness. This warning is based on anecdotal reports rather than strong studies, but given how risky GHB is, please do not combine them. If this is something you're dealing with, talk to your doctor or pharmacist right away.

What Is Phenelzine Used For?

Brand name: Nardil

Phenelzine is used to treat depression — specifically the types described as atypical, nonendogenous, or neurotic depression. This often includes people who have a mix of anxiety and depression, or who have phobic or hypochondriacal features (strong fears about illness or physical symptoms).

It is generally not the first antidepressant a doctor will try. It is best suited for patients who have already tried other antidepressants without enough relief. There is less evidence supporting its use in severe depression with classic biological features (called endogenous depression).
