What Is Nitisinone Used For?
Brand names: Orfadin, Nityr
Nitisinone is used to treat hereditary tyrosinemia type 1 (HT-1) — a rare inherited disease in which the body cannot properly break down the amino acid tyrosine, leading to dangerous buildups that damage the liver and kidneys. It is used in both adults and children, always alongside a strict low-tyrosine, low-phenylalanine diet. The brands Orfadin (capsule and oral suspension) and Nityr (tablet), as well as the generic nitisinone capsule, are approved for this use.
Harliku (nitisinone tablet) has a separate, distinct approval: it is used in adults with alkaptonuria (AKU) — another rare inherited metabolic disorder — to reduce levels of homogentisic acid (HGA), a harmful substance that builds up in the body.
