Black Alder + Levetiracetam
Levetiracetam brand names: Keppra, Elepsia XR, Spritam.
We found no known interaction between Black Alder and Levetiracetam in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Do not start, stop, or change a medication or supplement based on this page; confirm with your pharmacist or doctor first.
Black Alder and Levetiracetam
We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.
No Known Interaction Found
We did not find a documented interaction between Levetiracetam and Black Alder in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.
If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.
Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Levetiracetam
Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Levetiracetam is filed under 3 classifications — anticonvulsants, cns depressants, oral drugs. Black Alder has documented interactions with 2 drug classes — the most serious being cisplatin (platinol-aq) (moderate) and doxorubicin (adriamycin, others) (moderate) — and none of Levetiracetam’s classifications are among them.
Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.
Black Alder Does Interact With Other Medications
Black Alder has 2 moderate known drug interactions in our database — Levetiracetam isn’t one of them. If you take anything else, check it against the full list below.

These are real questions from readers, answered by the pharmacists at HelloPharmacist — written by a person, not generated from a database. From our pharmacist’s overview on the Levetiracetam page
“I would read this page carefully rather than casually. Levetiracetam (Keppra, Spritam) controls seizures, and both hazards on this list run through that fact.”

About Black Alder
What is Black Alder?
- Sore throat and mouth inflammation
- Skin wounds and irritation (topical)
- Fever and general aches (traditional)
- Digestive complaints
- Astringent for minor bleeding
Black Alder is a European tree whose bark and leaves have a long history in folk medicine, mainly as an astringent gargle or wound wash. There is very little modern human research to confirm any of these uses, and it can cause stomach upset, so it should be used cautiously and avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Alnus glutinosa · Betulaceae · Bark, leaves, and sometimes the catkins · Dried bark or leaf for tea, decoctions, tinctures, and gargles or mouth rinses
An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Black Alder is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Black Alder record says about it on its own.
Black Alder: dosing
There is no established, standardized dose for Black Alder. Traditional use involved making a tea or decoction from the dried bark or leaves, or using a diluted preparation as a gargle or skin wash.If you choose to use a product, follow the directions on the label and do not exceed the recommended amount.

About Levetiracetam
What Is Levetiracetam Used For?
Brand names: Keppra, Elepsia XR, Spritam
Levetiracetam treats partial-onset seizures (seizures that start in one area of the brain). Many products also add it to other medicines for myoclonic seizures in juvenile myoclonic epilepsy and for primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures in idiopathic generalized epilepsy.
Approved ages and uses differ by product. Extended-release products (Keppra XR, Elepsia XR, Levetiracetam ER) are only for partial-onset seizures in ages 12 and older. The injection is used when swallowing medicine by mouth is temporarily not possible.

Levetiracetam Is Linked to Lower Levels of One Nutrient
Natural Medicines records Levetiracetam as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Black Alder — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
