Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
THYROID HORMONE
Why this applies to Desiccated Thyroid Extract (prescription drug)
Desiccated Thyroid Extract (prescription drug) falls under THYROID HORMONE — the group Bugleweed interacts with.
Concomitant use of bugleweed may reduce the effects of thyroid hormones by blocking peripheral conversion of thyroxine (T4) to triiodothyronine (T3).
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the gist with this pairing. Desiccated thyroid extract (like Nature-Throid) is your replacement thyroid hormone, giving you both T4 and T3. Bugleweed is an herb traditionally used to calm an overactive thyroid, so it's essentially pulling in the opposite direction of your medication. On paper, it may also slow the conversion of T4 into the more active T3, which could blunt how well your thyroid medicine works.
If that happens, you might notice your old low-thyroid symptoms creeping back: fatigue, feeling cold, weight gain, constipation, or sluggishness. To be fair, this concern is theoretical and based mostly on how bugleweed behaves in lab and animal studies, not strong human data. Still, since you're treating a real thyroid condition, I'd skip the bugleweed unless your doctor or pharmacist okays it.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Desiccated Thyroid Extract (prescription drug) page
“If you take desiccated thyroid extract (Nature-Throid, Thyrar), the two major-rated interactions deserve your attention first, and the list as a whole warrants real caution. Activated charcoal can bind the medication in your gut and cut how much reaches your blood, and tiratricol is itself a thyroid hormone, so adding it risks overtrea…”

About Bugleweed
What is Bugleweed?
- Mild overactive thyroid symptoms
- Heart palpitations and rapid heartbeat
- Anxiety and restlessness
- Breast pain (mastalgia)
- Premenstrual symptoms
Bugleweed is a traditional herb most often used for mild overactive thyroid symptoms and the rapid heartbeat that can come with it, but high-quality human evidence is very limited. Because it may affect thyroid hormones, it should not be used without medical supervision, and it must be avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding.
