Cananga Oil and Dolutegravir

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Dolutegravir and Cananga Oil in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

Worth understanding: our licensed dataset holds no drug-interaction record for Cananga Oil at all — not against Dolutegravir, and not against any other medication we track. This verdict therefore rests on the absence of any recorded data, not on research that looked at this combination and found nothing. We cannot rule an interaction out.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

What Dolutegravir’s Own FDA Label Lists

This is not an interaction — none of it involves Cananga Oil. These are the most notable effects listed in the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of Dolutegravir’s own FDA label, for the medication by itself. Knowing the drug’s own list makes it easier to work out the likely cause if something new turns up while you take both. 2 of them are worth acting on rather than waiting out — marked below.

  • Liver problems Worth acting on
  • An allergic reaction Worth acting on
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Tiredness mentioned in 5.4% of FDA reports for Dolutegravir
  • Headache mentioned in 4.6% of FDA reports for Dolutegravir
  • A skin rash

From the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of the FDA label for Dolutegravir. Read the label on DailyMed › Where a percentage is shown, it is the share of 19,465 voluntary FDA FAERS reports for Dolutegravir that mention that effect — a reporting proportion, not an incidence rate and not evidence the drug caused it. Cananga Oil’s licensed record lists no adverse effects our clinical vocabulary could match, so there is no Cananga Oil side to compare — that is a limit of the record, not a statement that Cananga Oil has no side effects.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Dolutegravir page

“Dolutegravir (Tivicay) works only when its blood level stays high enough to keep HIV suppressed, so a supplement that drags that level down can let the virus rebound, and this list warrants genuine care. Three of the 65 entries are rated major.”

About Cananga Oil

What is Cananga Oil?

  • Relaxation and stress relief
  • Aromatherapy for calm or sleep
  • Perfume and fragrance
  • Skin and hair care products
  • Mood support

Cananga oil is a fragrant essential oil from the flowers of the Cananga odorata tree, closely related to ylang-ylang oil, and is used mainly in aromatherapy and perfumery for relaxation. There is little solid scientific evidence that it treats any medical condition, and like other essential oils it should never be swallowed and should be diluted before skin use. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have sensitive skin.

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Cananga Oil is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Cananga Oil record says about it on its own.

Cananga Oil: dosing

There is no established or standardized medical dose for cananga oil. It is used mainly as a scent rather than as a measured supplement. For aromatherapy, people typically add a few drops to a diffuser, and for skin use they dilute a small amount in a carrier oil such as coconut or jojoba oil. Never take it internally.
