Ibuprofen brand names: Motrin, Children's Motrin, Advil, Children's Advil, Fenbid Forte Gel, and others.

No Known Interaction
The bottom line No known interaction

We found no known interaction between Coconut Oil and Ibuprofen in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Do not start, stop, or change a medication or supplement based on this page; confirm with your pharmacist or doctor first. Additionally, although there is no interaction, the two are separately associated with some of the same side effects, which would make a new symptom harder to attribute to one or the other.

Coconut Oil and Ibuprofen

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Ibuprofen and Coconut Oil in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

Worth understanding: our licensed dataset holds no drug-interaction record for Coconut Oil at all — not against Ibuprofen, and not against any other medication we track. This verdict therefore rests on the absence of any recorded data, not on research that looked at this combination and found nothing. We cannot rule an interaction out.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

Coconut Oil safety at a glance

Coconut Oil overall Use caution Generally safe as a food, but it is high in saturated fat, so heavy dietary use may affect cholesterol.
Pregnancy Use caution Normal food amounts are likely fine, but avoid large medicinal doses without medical advice.
Breastfeeding Use caution Normal food amounts are likely fine; talk to your doctor before using large amounts as a supplement.

Safety guidance is general; always confirm with your pharmacist or doctor for your situation.

No Interaction Found — But Data Suggests Coconut Oil and Ibuprofen May Share a Side Effect

This is not an interaction. Neither one changes how your body handles the other, and nothing here says they react together. What our sources do show is that each has separately been linked to the effects below — so taking both can make those effects more likely to turn up, and harder to pin on one or the other if they do.

“Several cases of allergic reactions have been reported for patients who consumed coconut fruit. In some of the cases, the patients were previously diagnosed with sensitivity to other tree nuts, including peanuts, so cross-sensitivity is suspected. In a separate case report, a 17-year-old male was found to be sensitized to both coconut and buckwheat, indicating a possible cross-sensitivity between the two allergens.”

    Ibuprofen

Listed in the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of the FDA label for Ibuprofen. Read the label on DailyMed ›

Reported for Coconut Oil but not commonly for Ibuprofen: a heart attack, an allergic reaction, stomach pain and a severe allergic reaction.

Effects for Ibuprofen come from the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of its FDA label; effects for Coconut Oil come from the Natural Medicines adverse-effect record, quoted above. Where a percentage is shown, it is the share of 283,500 voluntary FDA FAERS reports for Ibuprofen that mention that effect — a reporting proportion, not an incidence rate and not evidence the drug caused it. Wording is matched across sources by our own clinical vocabulary, so treat this as a prompt to pay attention, not a diagnosis.

About Coconut Oil

What is Coconut Oil?

  • Cooking and food preparation
  • Skin moisturizer
  • Hair conditioning
  • Oral health (oil pulling)
  • Weight management
  • Heart health (popularly claimed)

Coconut oil is a popular fat used in cooking, skin care, and hair care, and many people believe it has special health benefits. The evidence for most health claims is limited or mixed, and because coconut oil is very high in saturated fat, eating large amounts may raise LDL ('bad') cholesterol. Use it in moderation and talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it for a specific health condition.

Cocos nucifera · Arecaceae · Oil extracted from the dried or fresh meat (kernel) of the coconut · Cooking oil (virgin and refined), capsules, skin and hair products, MCT oil derived from coconut

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Coconut Oil is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Coconut Oil record says about it on its own.

Coconut Oil: dosing

There is no official or standardized dose of coconut oil for any health condition. It is most often used simply as a cooking oil or food ingredient.Because it is high in saturated fat and calories, it is best used in moderation as part of a balanced diet. If you are using a coconut oil supplement or MCT product, follow the directions on the product label. For skin or hair use, a small amount applied to the area is typical.

Caldolor, an intravenous (IV) form, is approved for adults and children 3 months and older to manage mild to moderate pain, to manage moderate to severe pain alongside opioid pain medicines, and to reduce fever. A separate intravenous solution, Ibuprofen Lysine, is used specifically in premature infants to close a patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) — an abnormal blood vessel connection near the heart — when standard medical management has not worked.
