Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the short version: Eprosartan (Teveten) already lowers your blood pressure, and some animal studies suggest European mistletoe may nudge blood pressure down too. Stack the two and, in theory, your blood pressure could drop more than expected. That might show up as feeling dizzy or lightheaded, especially when you stand up quickly, plus tiredness or a headache.

I want to be honest about the evidence here: this is theoretical, based mostly on lab and animal research, not real cases in people. So it's not a reason to panic. Mistletoe should only ever be used under medical supervision anyway, since the plant is toxic if taken by mouth. Before combining anything with your Teveten, please check in with your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on your readings.

This page covers European Mistletoe only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Eprosartan page lists 138 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.

The most serious there right now: Activated Charcoal (major), American Hellebore (major), American Mistletoe (major), Tyramine (major) and Adrafinil (moderate).

By severity: 4 major · 112 moderate · 22 minor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Eprosartan page

“Activated charcoal deserves the first look from anyone taking eprosartan (Teveten) for blood pressure, because it can soak up the medicine in the gut and leave less of your dose to do its job. It is one of four major-rated entries among the 138 supplements and herbs on this page, enough to warrant real wariness rather than a shrug.”

About European Mistletoe

What is European Mistletoe?

European Mistletoe
  • Cancer supportive care
  • Immune support
  • High blood pressure
  • Anxiety and stress
  • Inflammation

European mistletoe is a parasitic plant most studied as an injectable extract used alongside conventional cancer care in some European countries, mainly to improve quality of life rather than to cure cancer. The plant is toxic if eaten, and oral or self-treatment can be dangerous, so it should only be used under medical supervision. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using any mistletoe product.

About Eprosartan

What Is Eprosartan Used For?

Brand name: Teveten

  • Eprosartan is used alone or in combination with other medications to treat high blood pressure. Eprosartan is in a class of medications called angiotensin II receptor antagonists. It works by blocking the action of certain natural substances that tighten the blood vessels, allowing the blood to flow more smoothly and the heart to pump more efficiently.

  • High blood pressure is a common condition, and when not treated it can cause damage to the brain, heart, blood vessels, kidneys, and other parts of the body. Damage to these organs may cause heart disease, a heart attack, heart failure, stroke, kidney failure, loss of vision, and other problems. In addition to taking medication, making lifestyle changes will also help to control your blood pressure. These changes include eating a diet that is low in fat and salt, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising at least 30 minutes most days, not smoking, and using alcohol in moderation.
