ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

Why this applies to Spironolactone

Spironolactone falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group European Mistletoe interacts with.

Theoretically, European mistletoe might increase the risk of hypotension when taken with antihypertensive drugs.
Animal research suggests that European mistletoe extracts have hypotensive effects.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist: spironolactone (Aldactone, Carospir) is one of those water pills that also nudges your blood pressure down. Some animal studies hint that European mistletoe can lower blood pressure too. So in theory, pairing the two could push your pressure lower than you want, leaving you feeling dizzy, lightheaded, or woozy when you stand up.

I'll be honest with you though, this is a theoretical concern based mostly on lab and animal work, not strong human studies, so I wouldn't panic. The bigger point is that mistletoe is genuinely toxic if swallowed and should only ever be used under a doctor's supervision. Before combining it with spironolactone, please loop in your pharmacist or doctor first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Spironolactone page

“Potassium is the supplement I check first for anyone on spironolactone (Aldactone, Carospir), because this water pill works by holding potassium in the body, and supplementing more on top of that can push blood levels too high. It is one of 206 supplement and herbal ingredients with documented interactions here, and the list warrants g…”

About European Mistletoe

What is European Mistletoe?

European Mistletoe
  • Cancer supportive care
  • Immune support
  • High blood pressure
  • Anxiety and stress
  • Inflammation

European mistletoe is a parasitic plant most studied as an injectable extract used alongside conventional cancer care in some European countries, mainly to improve quality of life rather than to cure cancer. The plant is toxic if eaten, and oral or self-treatment can be dangerous, so it should only be used under medical supervision. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using any mistletoe product.

About Spironolactone

What Is Spironolactone Used For?

Brand names: Aldactone, Spiroton, Carospir

Spironolactone tablets (including Aldactone) are used to treat moderate-to-severe heart failure, high blood pressure, and fluid retention (edema) caused by liver cirrhosis or nephrotic syndrome. They are also used to diagnose and manage primary hyperaldosteronism — a condition where the adrenal glands produce too much of the hormone aldosterone.

Spironolactone oral suspension shares several of these uses — heart failure, high blood pressure, and edema from liver cirrhosis — but is not the same as Aldactone and is not therapeutically interchangeable with it. Your prescriber will choose the right form for your situation.
