Hesperidin and Futibatinib

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES

Why this applies to Futibatinib

Futibatinib falls under P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES — the group Hesperidin interacts with.

Theoretically, hesperidin might inhibit P-glycoprotein-mediated drug efflux and potentially increase levels of drugs that are substrates of P-glycoprotein.
In vitro research shows that hesperidin can inhibit P-glycoprotein efflux. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist with Lytgobi (futibatinib), the targeted cancer pill used for certain bile duct cancers. Your body has a kind of cellular bouncer called P-glycoprotein that helps pump drugs like futibatinib back out. Hesperidin, the citrus flavonoid, may slow that pump down a bit. If the pump works slower, a little more futibatinib could hang around in your system, which in theory could mean stronger side effects like nail or skin problems, dry eyes, diarrhea, or changes in phosphate levels.

I want to be honest, though: this is only seen in lab studies, not in real people, so it's more of a caution than a proven problem. Still, since futibatinib is a serious cancer drug, please run any hesperidin supplement by your oncologist or pharmacist before adding it.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
  • BCase-control study.
  • CConsensus.
  • DAnecdotal evidence.

About Futibatinib

What Is Futibatinib Used For?

Brand name: Lytgobi

Lytgobi (futibatinib) is used to treat adults with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma — a cancer that starts inside the bile ducts within the liver — that cannot be surgically removed and has spread locally or to other parts of the body. It is specifically for patients whose cancer has a gene change called an FGFR2 fusion or rearrangement, confirmed by testing, and who have already received prior treatment.

This approval is based on how many patients' tumors responded to Lytgobi and how long those responses lasted. Final confirmation of long-term benefit is still being studied in follow-up clinical trials.
