Drug & supplement interaction

Levant Berry + Pramlintide

Pramlintide brand name: Symlin.

No Known Interaction
The bottom line No known interaction

We found no known interaction between Levant Berry and Pramlintide in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Do not start, stop, or change a medication or supplement based on this page; confirm with your pharmacist or doctor first. Additionally, although there is no interaction, the two are separately associated with some of the same side effects, which would make a new symptom harder to attribute to one or the other.

Levant Berry and Pramlintide

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Pramlintide and Levant Berry in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

Worth understanding: our licensed dataset holds no drug-interaction record for Levant Berry at all — not against Pramlintide, and not against any other medication we track. This verdict therefore rests on the absence of any recorded data, not on research that looked at this combination and found nothing. We cannot rule an interaction out.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

No Interaction Found — But Data Suggests Levant Berry and Pramlintide May Share Several of the Same Side Effects

This is not an interaction. Neither one changes how your body handles the other, and nothing here says they react together. What our sources do show is that each has separately been linked to the effects below — so taking both can make those effects more likely to turn up, and harder to pin on one or the other if they do.

  • Nausea / Dizziness / Vomiting / Headache reported in 8.8% of FDA reports for Pramlintide Additional detail

    Levant Berry

“Picrotoxin is a GI irritant and central nervous system stimulant (6). Mild poisoning can lead to headache, dizziness, nausea, coordination disturbances, depression, and spasms or twitching (18). Larger amounts can cause salivation, vomiting, purging, rapid shallow breathing, drowsiness, palpitations or bradycardia, tonic-clonic spasms, stupor, loss of consciousness, and death (6).”

Reported for Levant Berry but not commonly for Pramlintide: fainting, a fast or pounding heartbeat, a slow heartbeat and drowsiness.

Effects for Pramlintide come from the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of its FDA label; effects for Levant Berry come from the Natural Medicines adverse-effect record, quoted above. Where a percentage is shown, it is the share of 102 voluntary FDA FAERS reports for Pramlintide that mention that effect — a reporting proportion, not an incidence rate and not evidence the drug caused it. Wording is matched across sources by our own clinical vocabulary, so treat this as a prompt to pay attention, not a diagnosis.

See Every Supplement That Interacts With Pramlintide

This page covers Levant Berry only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Pramlintide page lists 239 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.

The most serious there right now: Siberian Cocklebur (major), Acai (moderate), African Wild Potato (moderate), Agaricus Mushroom (moderate) and Agmatine (moderate).

By severity: 1 major · 208 moderate · 30 minor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Pramlintide page

“The single entry rated major on the pramlintide (Symlin) list is Siberian cocklebur, which has caused severe hypoglycemia in humans, not just in lab studies. That matters more than usual here because pramlintide is injected at mealtimes alongside insulin, and a dangerous low is already the main hazard of that pairing.”

About Levant Berry

What is Levant Berry?

  • Historically as a fish poison (stunning fish)
  • Topical preparations for lice and skin parasites
  • Traditional remedies for epilepsy and convulsions
  • Old preparations for skin conditions
  • Source of the compound picrotoxin

Levant Berry (Anamirta cocculus) is a highly toxic plant fruit that contains picrotoxin, a powerful poison once used to stun fish and, in the past, as a crude medicine. It is dangerous and is not considered a safe dietary supplement; it should not be taken internally.

Anamirta cocculus · Menispermaceae · Dried ripe fruit (berry/seed) · Historically used as a crude dried berry; today rarely used and not recommended internally

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Levant Berry is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Levant Berry record says about it on its own.

Levant Berry: dosing

There is no established or recommended dose for Levant Berry, because it is toxic and not used as a safe supplement. We cannot provide a dose and strongly advise against taking it internally in any amount. If you encounter a product that lists this ingredient, do not use it without first checking with a pharmacist or doctor. About Pramlintide Injection

What Is Pramlintide Injection Used For?

Brand name: Symlin

SymlinPen (pramlintide) is used as an add-on treatment for adults with type 1 or type 2 diabetes who already use mealtime insulin but still haven't reached their target blood sugar levels — even with optimal insulin therapy.

It is not a replacement for insulin. It works alongside insulin, given right before major meals, to reduce the spike in blood sugar that happens after eating.
