Low Purine Diet and Cefprozil

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Cefprozil and Low Purine Diet in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — research on Low Purine Diet alongside specific medications may be limited.

Worth understanding: our licensed dataset holds no drug-interaction record for Low Purine Diet at all — not against Cefprozil, and not against any other medication we track. This verdict therefore rests on the absence of any recorded data, not on research that looked at this combination and found nothing. We cannot rule an interaction out.

Low Purine Diet is an eating pattern rather than something you take. Ask your pharmacist or doctor before changing how you eat while on a prescribed medicine: some medicines are dosed around meals, and a change in diet can change how they work. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

What Cefprozil’s Own FDA Label Lists

This is not an interaction — none of it involves Low Purine Diet. These are the most notable effects listed in the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of Cefprozil’s own FDA label, for the medication by itself. Knowing the drug’s own list makes it easier to work out the likely cause if something new turns up while you follow Low Purine Diet and take the medicine.

  • Stomach pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Nausea

From the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of the FDA label for Cefprozil. Read the label on DailyMed › Where a percentage is shown, it is the share of 780 voluntary FDA FAERS reports for Cefprozil that mention that effect — a reporting proportion, not an incidence rate and not evidence the drug caused it. Low Purine Diet’s licensed record lists no adverse effects our clinical vocabulary could match, so there is no Low Purine Diet side to compare — that is a limit of the record, not a statement that Low Purine Diet has no side effects.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Cefprozil page

“Cefprozil (Cefzil) is a cephalosporin antibiotic, usually a short course for ear, sinus, throat, or skin infections, and three of the 60 supplements on this list warrant real caution even for a week of pills. Activated charcoal can bind the drug and pull it out of your system before it works.”

About Low Purine Diet

What is Low Purine Diet?

  • Gout management
  • Lowering uric acid levels
  • Preventing kidney stones (uric acid stones)
  • Reducing gout flare-ups

A low purine diet is an eating plan that limits foods high in purines, which the body breaks down into uric acid. It is mainly used to help manage gout and certain kidney stones, often alongside medication. While it can lower uric acid somewhat, diet alone usually is not enough for most people with gout, so work with your doctor on a full treatment plan.

Dietary pattern (meal plan), not a supplement

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Low Purine Diet is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Low Purine Diet record says about it on its own.

Low Purine Diet: dosing

There is no fixed "dose" for a low purine diet because it is an eating pattern, not a pill. In general, the goal is to limit high-purine foods (organ meats, red meat, certain seafood, beer, and sugary drinks) while eating more vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and low-fat dairy.Drinking plenty of water and limiting alcohol are also key parts of the plan.

About Cefprozil

What Is Cefprozil Used For?

Brand name: Cefzil

Cefprozil tablets and oral suspension are both used to treat mild to moderate bacterial infections in adults and children. Approved uses include pharyngitis/tonsillitis (strep throat), acute sinusitis, otitis media (ear infections), acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, and uncomplicated skin and skin-structure infections.

Cefprozil tablets are also approved for secondary bacterial infection of acute bronchitis. Because antibiotic resistance is a real concern, cefprozil should only be used when the infection is proven or strongly suspected to be caused by bacteria that respond to it.

Most-Reported Side Effects for Cefprozil
