Music Therapy and Sodium Oxybate

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Sodium Oxybate and Music Therapy in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — research on Music Therapy alongside specific medications may be limited.

Worth understanding: our licensed dataset holds no drug-interaction record for Music Therapy at all — not against Sodium Oxybate, and not against any other medication we track. This verdict therefore rests on the absence of any recorded data, not on research that looked at this combination and found nothing. We cannot rule an interaction out.

Music Therapy is a treatment rather than something you take. Tell whoever provides it which medicines you use, and ask your prescriber whether it is appropriate for your health and treatment. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

  • Drowsiness mentioned in 6.0% of FDA reports for Sodium Oxybate
  • Dry mouth

From the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of the FDA label for Sodium Oxybate. Read the label on DailyMed › Where a percentage is shown, it is the share of 65,315 voluntary FDA FAERS reports for Sodium Oxybate that mention that effect — a reporting proportion, not an incidence rate and not evidence the drug caused it. Music Therapy’s licensed record lists no adverse effects our clinical vocabulary could match, so there is no Music Therapy side to compare — that is a limit of the record, not a statement that Music Therapy has no side effects.

See Every Supplement That Interacts With Sodium Oxybate

This page covers Music Therapy only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Sodium Oxybate page lists 25 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.

The most serious there right now: Activated Charcoal (major), Biofeedback (moderate), Coffee Charcoal (moderate), Dendrobium (moderate) and European Mandrake (moderate).

By severity: 1 major · 15 moderate · 9 minor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Sodium Oxybate page

“Activated charcoal is the single major-rated interaction with sodium oxybate (Xyrem), and it earns that rating because the drug only works if each dose is fully absorbed; charcoal can bind it in the gut and weaken the nighttime control it provides for narcolepsy. Treat this list with genuine care, since 17 of the 25 ingredients on file…”

About Music Therapy

What is Music Therapy?

  • Anxiety and stress
  • Depression and low mood
  • Pain management
  • Dementia and memory support
  • Coping during medical procedures
  • Rehabilitation after stroke or injury

Music therapy is a non-drug, evidence-informed practice where trained therapists use music to support emotional, mental, and physical health. It is generally very safe and may help with stress, mood, pain, and quality of life, though it is best used alongside (not instead of) standard medical care.

Not applicable (a therapeutic practice, not a plant or substance) · Active music-making, listening to recorded or live music, guided sessions with a trained music therapist, group or individual sessions

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Music Therapy is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Music Therapy record says about it on its own.

Music Therapy: dosing

There is no standardized "dose" for music therapy, since it is a practice rather than a product. Session length, frequency, and type are usually chosen by a certified music therapist based on your goals and needs. In studies and clinical settings, sessions often last roughly 20 to 60 minutes and may be done once or several times a week, but this varies widely. Casual listening to calming music on your own is also a safe, simple way to relax.
