ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS
Why this applies to Acetaminophen, Ibuprofen
Acetaminophen, Ibuprofen falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Plum interacts with.
Consuming plum juice while taking anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs might increase the risk of bruising and bleeding. In healthy volunteers, drinking plum juice 200 mL daily for 28 days prolonged clotting time and inhibited platelet aggregation.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the thing to keep in mind with Combogesic, which combines acetaminophen and ibuprofen. The ibuprofen part already has a mild blood-thinning effect of its own, since it temporarily reduces how well your platelets clump together to form clots. Plum juice may do a little of the same thing. In one study, healthy folks who drank about a cup of plum juice daily for four weeks had slightly longer clotting times.
Stacking the two could, in theory, nudge up your odds of easy bruising, nosebleeds, or stomach upset and bleeding. This is mostly theoretical, and a plum or two as food is very unlikely to matter. If you take Combogesic regularly or use concentrated plum supplements, just check in with your pharmacist or doctor first.
