Slippery Elm and Aminophylline

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ORAL DRUGS

Why this applies to Aminophylline

Aminophylline falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Slippery Elm interacts with.

Theoretically, slippery elm may slow the absorption and reduce serum levels of oral drugs.
Slippery elm inner bark contains mucilage, which may interfere with the absorption of orally administered drugs.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the basic concern with pairing slippery elm and aminophylline. Slippery elm forms a slick, gel-like coating in your gut, and the worry is that this gel could trap or slow down anything you swallow nearby, including your aminophylline. If less of the drug gets absorbed, your blood levels could dip, and that might mean weaker control of your breathing symptoms like wheezing or shortness of breath.

I want to be honest though: this is a theoretical interaction based on how slippery elm behaves, not on real-world cases with this medicine. Still, aminophylline works in a fairly narrow window, so a simple fix helps a lot. Just separate them by a couple of hours, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

About Slippery Elm

What is Slippery Elm?

Slippery Elm
  • Sore throat and cough
  • Heartburn and acid reflux
  • Digestive upset and IBS
  • Skin irritation (topical)
  • Constipation or diarrhea

Slippery elm is a traditional herbal remedy made from the inner bark of a North American elm tree, used mainly to soothe sore throats and irritated digestive tracts. Its mucilage can coat and calm mucous membranes, but solid human evidence for most uses is limited. It is generally considered low-risk for short-term use, but you should still check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Aminophylline

What Is Aminophylline Used For?

Brand name: Aminophylline

Aminophylline Injection is given intravenously (by IV) in a hospital or clinical setting to help open the airways during a severe asthma attack or an acute worsening of chronic lung conditions such as emphysema and chronic bronchitis. It is used alongside inhaled beta-2 agonist inhalers and corticosteroids — not as a standalone treatment.

It works to relieve the reversible airflow blockage that makes it hard to breathe during these acute episodes.
