Here's the gist with slippery elm and naproxen. Slippery elm is rich in mucilage, a sticky fiber that swells into a gel in your gut. The thinking is that this gel could form a coating that slows down how well a pill like naproxen is absorbed. If less of it gets into your bloodstream, you might get less pain relief from your dose.

I want to be honest: this is a theoretical concern based on how slippery elm works, not something proven in studies, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. To stay safe, a simple trick is to space them apart, taking your naproxen a couple of hours before or after the slippery elm. Run that timing by your pharmacist or doctor first.

Its mucilage can coat and calm mucous membranes, but solid human evidence for most uses is limited. What Is Naproxen Used For?

Brand names: Naprosyn, Naprelan, Anaprox, Anaprox DS, Naproxyn, Navalbine, Naproxen, Naprosyn EC, Napro-Na, Aleve, Arthroxen, Synflex, EC-Naprosyn

Naproxen tablets, naproxen sodium tablets, and naproxen oral suspension are used to relieve the signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis. They are also used for tendonitis, bursitis, and acute gout, and for managing pain and primary dysmenorrhea (menstrual cramps).

Naproxen Sodium Controlled-Release Tablets are indicated for the same conditions plus the relief of mild to moderate pain. Several over-the-counter naproxen sodium products are indicated for the temporary relief of minor aches and pains from headache, backache, muscular aches, toothache, menstrual cramps, minor arthritis pain, and the common cold, and to temporarily reduce fever.
