Rice Bran Arabinoxylan Compound Drug Interactions, Uses, Effectiveness, Safety & More
What is this page for?
First and foremost: how Rice Bran Arabinoxylan Compound interacts with medications. The heart of this page is the interaction list — every drug Rice Bran Arabinoxylan Compound is known to interact with, and how serious each one is.
But these pages have grown well beyond that into a full monograph — what Rice Bran Arabinoxylan Compound is, what people use it for and how strong the evidence is, its safety and side effects, and answers to the questions we’re asked most — written and reviewed by the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases, not medical advice, and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Add one medicationRice Bran Arabinoxylan Compound Drug Interactions: The Bottom Line
From the HelloPharmacist Editorial Team · Updated July 2026Based on the available evidence, the overall risk of a clinically significant Rice Bran Arabinoxylan Compound drug interaction appears low for most people, though those taking medicines that suppress the immune system are the exception. None of the listed interactions are rated major, and every one traces back to a single theoretical concern involving one class of medications.
The interactions that matter most involve immunosuppressants, such as cyclosporine, azathioprine, and similar transplant or autoimmune medicines. Rice bran arabinoxylan compound has been shown in lab and human research to stimulate immune cell activity, so in theory it could work against drugs that are meant to calm the immune system. Because transplant medicines have a narrow margin for error, even a theoretical effect deserves caution in this group.
Although the list of interacting medications looks long, it reflects one shared concern spread across the many drugs in this single class, not dozens of separate problems. The interaction is graded as theoretical, meaning it is based on the supplement's known immune-stimulating activity rather than documented harm in people taking these medicines together.
Based on HelloPharmacist’s Rice Bran Arabinoxylan Compound interaction data and reviewed under our editorial standards.

Severity — How Serious It Can Be
- Major. Clinically significant; generally best avoided, or used only under direct professional supervision.
- Moderate. May need monitoring, a dose adjustment, or separating the times you take each one.

Immunosuppressants
Theoretically, rice bran arabinoxylan compound might interfere with immunosuppressants by stimulating the immune system. In laboratory and human research, rice bran arabinoxylan compound has been shown to stimulate the activity of immune cells.
Some immunosuppressants include azathioprine (Imuran), basiliximab (Simulect), cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune), daclizumab (Zenapax), muromonab-CD3 (OKT3, Orthoclone OKT3), mycophenolate (CellCept), tacrolimus (FK506, Prograf), sirolimus (Rapamune), prednisone (Deltasone, Orasone), corticosteroids (glucocorticoids), and others.
Rice Bran Arabinoxylan Compound: Uses, Safety & Side Effects
Rice Bran Arabinoxylan Compound (often sold under brand names like MGN-3 or BioBran) is a processed fiber from rice bran treated with mushroom enzymes, marketed mainly as an immune booster. Early small studies suggest it may affect certain immune cells, but high-quality human evidence is very limited, and it should never replace standard medical care. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially during cancer treatment.

Overview
Rice Bran Arabinoxylan Compound is a dietary supplement made from rice bran, which is the nutrient-rich outer layer of the rice grain. To make it, the rice bran is treated with enzymes that come from shiitake mushroom. This processing breaks down the fiber into smaller pieces called arabinoxylans, which are thought to be more active in the body.
You may see this product sold under brand names such as MGN-3 or BioBran. It is most often marketed as an immune-supporting supplement and is popular among people looking for general wellness support or extra support during illness.
It comes in capsules, tablets, powders, and granules. Rice is grown widely around the world, but this particular product is a specially manufactured compound rather than something you can get from simply eating rice or rice bran.
How it works
The active parts of this product are arabinoxylans — chains of plant sugars (fibers) released when rice bran is treated with mushroom enzymes. Because these pieces are smaller than natural rice bran fiber, researchers believe the body may interact with them differently.
Laboratory and animal studies suggest arabinoxylans may act on the immune system, possibly by stimulating immune cells like natural killer (NK) cells, T cells, and B cells, and by affecting signaling chemicals called cytokines. Some research suggests possible antioxidant effects as well.
It is important to remember that most of this information comes from test-tube and animal research. What happens in a lab dish does not always happen the same way in the human body, so these mechanisms are still considered theories rather than proven effects.

How to read these evidence grades
Natural Medicines’ 7-point scale. We show each rating’s label word-for-word.
For Rice Bran Arabinoxylan Compound, current evidence isn’t strong enough to rate any specific use. The conditions it has been studied for are listed below.
Also studied for 5 conditions — evidence insufficient to rate
Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS)
Evidence from an early, uncontrolled, observational study suggested that rice bran arabinoxylan compound can reduce fatigue and increase natural killer cell activity in patients with CFS. However, results from a more recent, higher quality clinical study shows that taking rice bran arabinoxylan compound 2 grams three times daily for 8 weeks does not improve fatigue, anxiety, depression, or other symptoms related to CFS compared to placebo. However, due to the small size of this latter study, the possibility of type II error (false negative) cannot be ruled out.
Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate Hepatitis C
A small preliminary clinical trial shows that taking rice bran arabinoxylan compound 1 gram daily for 3 months is as effective for reducing viral load as PEGylated interferon 180 micrograms weekly subcutaneously plus ribavirin 1000 or 1200 mg daily based on weight in patients with hepatitis C virus genotype 4. There was no effect on liver enzymes. A larger, well-designed trial is needed to confirm these results.
Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate HIV/AIDS
Preliminary clinical research in patients on stable antiretroviral therapy for HIV shows that taking a specific rice bran arabinoxylan product (Biobran/MGV-3, Daiwa Pharmaceuticals) 1 gram three times daily for 6 months does not increase CD4+ cell count, reduce blood pressure, or improve markers of liver and kidney function when compared with placebo. However, it does decrease CD8+ cell count when compared with placebo. This study may have been inadequately powered to detect a difference between groups.
Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate Liver cancer
Preliminary clinical research in patients with stage I or II hepatocellular carcinoma shows that taking rice bran arabinoxylan compound 1 gram daily for 12 months in conjunction with interventional therapy may increase survival after 2 years and reduce the risk of recurrence compared to interventional therapy alone. Survival after the second year was 35% for patients treated with rice bran arabinoxylan compound plus interventional therapy compared to only 6.7% for patients treated with interventional therapy alone. Recurrence of the disease occurred in 31.6% of patients treated with rice bran arabinoxylan compound plus interventional therapy compared to 46.7% of patients treated with interventional therapy alone. Interventional therapy consisted of transarterial oily chemoembolization (TOCE), percutaneous ethanol injection therapy (PEIT), and/or radiofrequency ablation (RFA).
Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate Quality of life
Preliminary clinical research in healthy adults at least 56 years of age shows that taking a specific rice bran arabinoxylan product (Biobran/MGV-3, Daiwa Pharmaceuticals) 250 mg divided three times daily for 3 months improves physical and mental health-related quality of life scores when compared with placebo.

Safety & precautions
In short-term studies, Rice Bran Arabinoxylan Compound has generally been well tolerated by most people. Still, long-term safety has not been well studied, and supplement quality can vary between brands since these products are not tightly regulated.
People who should be especially careful include those with weakened immune systems, those undergoing cancer treatment, and people with serious medical conditions. Because this product may affect the immune system, anyone with an autoimmune condition or who takes immune-related medicines should check with a doctor or pharmacist first.
For pregnancy and breastfeeding, there is not enough reliable safety information. Because of this lack of data, it is best to avoid using it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
People with rice allergies should also use caution. As with any supplement, talk to your pharmacist or doctor before starting, especially if you take other medicines or have a chronic health condition.
Side effects
Reported side effects are usually mild. Some people may notice digestive symptoms such as mild stomach upset, bloating, gas, or loose stools, which can happen with fiber-based products.
Serious side effects have not been commonly reported, but because the research is limited, rare reactions cannot be ruled out. People with a rice allergy could potentially have an allergic reaction. Stop using the product and seek medical care if you develop signs of an allergic reaction such as rash, itching, swelling, or trouble breathing.

Dosing
There is no official or standardized dose for Rice Bran Arabinoxylan Compound. Amounts used in studies have varied, and products differ in strength and form.
The safest approach is to follow the directions on the product label and not exceed the recommended amount. Because doses and product quality vary so much, it is a good idea to check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting, especially if you have a health condition or take other medicines.
