Theoretically, rice bran arabinoxylan compound might interfere with immunosuppressants by stimulating the immune system. In laboratory and human research, rice bran arabinoxylan compound has been shown to stimulate the activity of immune cells.
Some immunosuppressants include azathioprine (Imuran), basiliximab (Simulect), cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune), daclizumab (Zenapax), muromonab-CD3 (OKT3, Orthoclone OKT3), mycophenolate (CellCept), tacrolimus (FK506, Prograf), sirolimus (Rapamune), prednisone (Deltasone, Orasone), corticosteroids (glucocorticoids), and others.

Here's the tricky thing with this pairing. Rice Bran Arabinoxylan Compound is sold as an immune booster, and in lab and small human studies it seems to rev up certain immune cells. That's the opposite of what some immune-calming drugs are trying to do. With Thalidomide it's a bit of a mixed bag, since this medicine actually strengthens the immune system to fight myeloma but also quiets the inflammation that causes leprosy skin flares (ENL).

So the worry is mostly theoretical and based on how things work on paper, not on real cases. If you're taking Thalidomide for ENL, a supplement that stirs up the immune system could, in theory, make it harder to keep those painful skin sores and nerve flares calmed down. Please don't start this product on your own. Run it by your oncologist or pharmacist first.

About Thalidomide

What Is Thalidomide Used For?

Brand name: Thalomid

Thalomid (thalidomide capsules) is approved for two uses. First, it is used in combination with dexamethasone to treat newly diagnosed multiple myeloma — a cancer of plasma cells in the bone marrow.

Second, Thalomid is used on its own to treat the skin symptoms of moderate to severe erythema nodosum leprosum (ENL), a painful inflammatory reaction that can occur in people with leprosy. It can also be used as ongoing maintenance therapy to prevent ENL from coming back. Note: Thalomid is not approved as the sole treatment for ENL when moderate to severe nerve inflammation (neuritis) is also present.
