Danshen + Naproxen
Naproxen brand names: Naprosyn, Naprelan, Anaprox, Anaprox DS, Naproxyn, and others.
Naproxen falls into 3 drug categories that Danshen can interact with; the most serious is rated major. Theoretically, danshen may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.

These two interact in 3 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 3 Interactions?
Danshen interacts with whole categories of medication. Naproxen falls into 3 of those categories, so it can interact with Danshen in 3 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Major).
ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS
1 of 3Why this applies to Naproxen
Naproxen falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Danshen interacts with.
Danshen has been reported to have antithrombotic effects. Animal research also suggests that taking a danshen combination formula with clopidogrel exhibits a synergistic increase in antiplatelet aggregation and prolongation of coagulation time when compared with either taken alone.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the simple version. Naproxen is an anti-inflammatory pain reliever (an NSAID), and on its own it can already irritate the stomach lining and make you bleed or bruise a little more easily. Danshen, on its side, seems to thin the blood and slow down clotting. Put the two together and you may stack two effects that both nudge you toward bleeding.
The realistic worry would be things like stomach upset, dark or tarry stools, easy bruising, or nosebleeds that take a while to stop. I want to be honest that this is mostly theoretical and based on weak, anecdotal reports, not strong human studies, so don't panic. Still, since both can affect bleeding, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES
2 of 3Naproxen also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research shows that danshen tincture and various constituents of danshen inhibit the activity of CYP1A2. However, this activity has not been shown in humans when theophylline, a CYP1A2 substrate, was used as a target drug.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the situation with Danshen and naproxen. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP1A2 to help clear naproxen out of your body. Danshen, in test-tube studies, looks like it can slow that enzyme down. If that happened in real life, naproxen could build up a bit and its effects, including the unwanted ones, could feel stronger. Think more stomach upset, heartburn, or a higher chance of stomach irritation or bleeding.
But here's the important part: this concern is mostly theoretical and comes from lab work, not from people. When researchers tested a similar CYP1A2 drug in humans, Danshen didn't really change things. What worries me more is that Danshen itself may thin the blood, and naproxen already raises bleeding risk, so together that's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor.

CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES
3 of 3Naproxen also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research shows that various constituents of danshen inhibit the activity of CYP2C9. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the quick picture with Danshen and naproxen. Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP2C9 to break naproxen down and clear it out. In lab tests, compounds in Danshen seem to slow that enzyme. If that happens in real life, naproxen could hang around a bit longer and feel a little stronger than usual.
With naproxen, more drug in your system can mean more of its typical downsides, like stomach upset, heartburn, a higher chance of stomach bleeding, fluid retention, or blood pressure changes. Keep in mind this is only a theoretical concern from test-tube studies, and it hasn't actually been reported in people. Danshen can also affect clotting on its own, which matters with an NSAID. Before combining them, please check with your pharmacist or doctor.

- Heart and circulation support
- Angina (chest pain)
- High blood pressure
- Anxiety and stress

Danshen is a root used in traditional Chinese medicine, mainly for heart and circulation problems. Some early research is promising, but the evidence is not strong enough to confirm it works for any condition, and it may affect blood clotting. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you take other medicines or have a health condition.

Naproxen Is Linked to Lower Levels of One Nutrient
Natural Medicines records Naproxen as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Danshen — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
