Anagrelide falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Danshen interacts with.

Theoretically, danshen may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Danshen has been reported to have antithrombotic effects. Animal research also suggests that taking a danshen combination formula with clopidogrel exhibits a synergistic increase in antiplatelet aggregation and prolongation of coagulation time when compared with either taken alone.

Here's the thing with anagrelide (Agrylin): besides lowering your platelet count, it also has a mild blood-thinning action of its own, since it slows how sticky platelets are. Danshen seems to nudge things in the same direction, lowering your body's ability to form clots. Stack the two together and you may tilt a little too far toward easy bleeding.

Realistically that could show up as easier bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or cuts that take longer to stop. I'll be honest with you though, this concern is mostly theoretical and based on animal studies and scattered reports, not solid human trials. Still, since bleeding is serious, please loop in your doctor or pharmacist before adding Danshen.

Anagrelide also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, danshen may increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.
In vitro research shows that danshen tincture and various constituents of danshen inhibit the activity of CYP1A2. However, this activity has not been shown in humans when theophylline, a CYP1A2 substrate, was used as a target drug.

Here's the idea behind this pairing. Your body uses an enzyme called CYP1A2 to help break down anagrelide. In test-tube studies, Danshen seems to slow that enzyme down. If that happened in your body, anagrelide could clear more slowly and build up a bit, which might mean a stronger effect and more side effects like headache, a pounding or fast heartbeat, dizziness, swelling, or stomach upset.

That said, I want to be honest with you: this is theoretical. It comes from lab work only, and when researchers tested a similar drug in real people, they didn't actually see this slowdown. So the real-world risk may be small. Still, since both Danshen and anagrelide can also affect bleeding and platelets, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What Is Anagrelide Used For?

Brand name: Agrylin

Anagrelide — sold as Agrylin and as generic anagrelide capsules — is used to treat thrombocythemia secondary to myeloproliferative neoplasms. That means it's prescribed when a bone marrow disorder causes the body to produce too many platelets, raising the risk of dangerous blood clots.

By bringing platelet counts down to a safer range, anagrelide also helps reduce related symptoms, including bleeding and clotting events (thrombo-hemorrhagic events).
