Why this applies to Aripiprazole

Aripiprazole falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Danshen interacts with.

Danshen might alter the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
Preliminary clinical research in healthy males shows that the administration of danshen for 10-14 days induces intestinal CYP3A4 and increases the clearance of midazolam, a CYP3A4 substrate. The maximum concentration of midazolam was decreased by 31% to 67%, and drug levels were decreased by 27% to 80%. However, a single dose of danshen has the opposite effect, increasing maximum concentrations of midazolam by 87%.

Here's the situation with aripiprazole (Abilify) and Danshen. Your body partly clears aripiprazole using a liver and gut enzyme called CYP3A4. In a small human study, taking Danshen for about 10 to 14 days actually sped that enzyme up, which could lower your aripiprazole levels over time. If that happens, the medicine may not work as well, and symptoms like mood swings, agitation, or unusual thinking could creep back.

Interestingly, a single dose of Danshen did the opposite and raised drug levels briefly, which could mean more side effects like sleepiness, restlessness, or dizziness. Because the direction can flip and aripiprazole keeps you stable, don't add or stop Danshen on your own. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor first.
