Aripiprazole falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Yerba Mate interacts with.

Theoretically, yerba mate might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that yerba mate extract inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes. Theoretically, taking yerba mate may increase levels and adverse effects of CYP3A4 substrates.

Here's the gist: your body relies partly on an enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear aripiprazole (Abilify) out of your system. In lab dish studies, yerba mate appears to slow that enzyme down a bit. If that held true in real life, your aripiprazole might break down a little slower and drift higher, which could nudge up side effects like drowsiness, restlessness or an inner sense of needing to move, lightheadedness, or nausea.

The honest part: this is only a theoretical concern based on test-tube work, not real patients, and it's rated as minor. An occasional cup of mate is unlikely to cause trouble. Still, if you drink it heavily every day, mention it to your pharmacist or prescriber, and don't change your aripiprazole on your own.
