Spironolactone falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Yerba Mate interacts with.

Theoretically, the caffeine in yerba mate might increase the risk of hypokalemia when used concomitantly with other diuretics.
Yerba mate contains caffeine. Caffeine, especially in excessive amounts, can reduce potassium levels due to stimulation of the sodium-potassium pump. Diuretics can also cause lower potassium levels.

Here's a little twist worth knowing about. The concern listed in our database is about caffeine (from yerba mate) lowering potassium when paired with most diuretics. But spironolactone is a potassium-sparing diuretic, which means it actually works to hold onto potassium rather than flush it out. So in your case, the caffeine in mate and the spironolactone are pulling in opposite directions on potassium, and the typical worry about low potassium from this combo is much less of a concern.

That said, this whole interaction is theoretical and based on how things work on paper, not strong human studies. Normal amounts of mate are unlikely to cause trouble. The bigger thing with spironolactone is watching that potassium doesn't climb too high. If you drink mate regularly, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on your levels.

About Spironolactone

What Is Spironolactone Used For?

Brand names: Aldactone, Spiroton, Carospir

Spironolactone tablets (including Aldactone) are used to treat moderate-to-severe heart failure, high blood pressure, and fluid retention (edema) caused by liver cirrhosis or nephrotic syndrome. They are also used to diagnose and manage primary hyperaldosteronism — a condition where the adrenal glands produce too much of the hormone aldosterone.

Spironolactone oral suspension shares several of these uses — heart failure, high blood pressure, and edema from liver cirrhosis — but is not the same as Aldactone and is not therapeutically interchangeable with it. Your prescriber will choose the right form for your situation.
