Yerba Mate and Levofloxacin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

QUINOLONE ANTIBIOTICS

Why this applies to Levofloxacin

Levofloxacin falls under QUINOLONE ANTIBIOTICS — the group Yerba Mate interacts with.

Theoretically, quinolone antibiotics might increase the levels and adverse effects of the caffeine in yerba mate.
Yerba mate contains caffeine. Quinolones (also called fluoroquinolones) can decrease caffeine clearance by inhibiting cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) enzyme.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence B

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to know about pairing yerba mate with levofloxacin: the antibiotic isn't really the one that gets affected here, the caffeine in your mate is. Levofloxacin can slow down the liver enzyme (CYP1A2) that normally clears caffeine from your body. So the caffeine sticks around longer and can pile up.

In practical terms, that may mean more of the usual caffeine jitters: a racing or pounding heart, feeling wired or anxious, an upset stomach, or trouble sleeping. This is considered a likely interaction, though it's based on modest evidence. A single cup probably won't floor you, but heavy mate drinking while on levofloxacin could leave you feeling overcaffeinated. If you notice that, simply cutting back usually helps. Check with your pharmacist or doctor if you're unsure.

About Yerba Mate

What is Yerba Mate?

Yerba Mate
  • Energy and alertness
  • Weight loss
  • Mental focus
  • Digestive support
  • Antioxidant support

Yerba mate is a caffeine-containing herbal beverage from South America that is widely enjoyed for its stimulating, coffee-like effects. While it is rich in antioxidants and is being studied for weight, blood sugar, and cholesterol, strong human evidence for most health claims is limited. Drinking very hot mate over many years has been linked to higher risk of certain cancers, so enjoy it warm and in moderation.

About Levofloxacin

What Is Levofloxacin Used For?

Brand names: Levaquin, Levaquin Injection, Leva-pak

Levofloxacin treats bacterial infections in adults, including pneumonia (both community-acquired and hospital-acquired), skin infections, urinary tract infections, kidney infections, chronic bacterial prostatitis, and sinus infections. It is also used after exposure to inhalational anthrax and for plague.

Because levofloxacin carries significant risks, it should only be used for uncomplicated urinary tract infections, acute bacterial worsening of chronic bronchitis, and acute bacterial sinusitis when no other treatment option is available. Always use it only for infections confirmed or strongly suspected to be bacterial.
