ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS
Why this applies to Naproxen
Naproxen falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Yerba Mate interacts with.
Yerba mate contains caffeine. Caffeine is reported to have antiplatelet activity. Theoretically, it might increase the risk of bleeding when used concomitantly with these agents; however, this interaction has not been reported in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with naproxen and yerba mate. Naproxen is an NSAID that already nudges up bleeding risk a little by affecting how your platelets clump together, and it can irritate the stomach lining too. Yerba mate's caffeine has shown some mild platelet-slowing activity in lab studies, so in theory stacking the two could add up to a slightly higher chance of bruising, nosebleeds, or stomach upset.
I want to be honest, though: this is a theoretical concern based on lab work, not something reported in real people, so I wouldn't lose sleep over a cup or two. A whole pot daily plus regular naproxen is worth mentioning to your pharmacist, especially if you notice easy bruising or dark stools.

About Yerba Mate
What is Yerba Mate?
- Energy and alertness
- Weight loss
- Mental focus
- Digestive support
- Antioxidant support
Yerba mate is a caffeine-containing herbal beverage from South America that is widely enjoyed for its stimulating, coffee-like effects. While it is rich in antioxidants and is being studied for weight, blood sugar, and cholesterol, strong human evidence for most health claims is limited. Drinking very hot mate over many years has been linked to higher risk of certain cancers, so enjoy it warm and in moderation.

Naproxen Is Linked to Lower Levels of One Nutrient
Natural Medicines records Naproxen as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Yerba Mate — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
