Here's the simple version: yerba mate is loaded with caffeine, and caffeine is a stimulant that revs up your nervous system. Clobazam (Onfi, Sympazan) works in the opposite direction by quieting down overactive electrical signaling in the brain. So in theory, the caffeine in mate could nudge against the calming, sedative side of clobazam. This idea is based on how the two work in the body, not on solid studies in people taking clobazam for seizures, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it.

What does that mean for you day to day? A large amount of mate could make clobazam feel a little less calming, or add some jitteriness and trouble sleeping. It's very unlikely to undo its seizure protection, but since seizure control is too important to gamble with, please check with your neurologist or pharmacist before changing your mate habit, and watch for any change in how you feel.

What Is Clobazam Used For?

Clobazam is used as an add-on (adjunctive) treatment for seizures linked to Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome (LGS), a severe form of childhood-onset epilepsy. It is approved for patients 2 years of age and older.

This indication applies to all available forms: Sympazan (dissolving oral film), Onfi (tablets and oral suspension), and generic clobazam tablets and oral suspension.
