Almotriptan falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Yerba Mate interacts with.

Theoretically, yerba mate might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that yerba mate extract inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes. Theoretically, taking yerba mate may increase levels and adverse effects of CYP3A4 substrates.

Here's the gist for migraine relief with Axert. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear almotriptan from your body. Lab studies (done in test tubes, not in people) suggest yerba mate can mildly slow that same enzyme down. In theory, that could let a bit more almotriptan linger, which might bump up its usual side effects like a flushed feeling, mild chest or throat tightness, tingling, drowsiness, or a touch of dizziness.

I want to be straight with you though: this is rated as a minor interaction backed only by lab data, so for most folks an occasional cup of mate alongside your migraine dose isn't likely to cause real trouble. If you drink mate regularly or notice anything off after dosing, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Almotriptan

What Is Almotriptan Used For?

Brand names: Axert, Almogran

Almotriptan tablets are used to treat migraine headache attacks — with or without aura — as they happen. They are not for preventing migraines before they start.

In adults, almotriptan tablets treat acute migraine attacks. In adolescents ages 12 to 17, almotriptan tablets treat acute migraine headache pain in those who typically have attacks lasting 4 hours or more when untreated. Note that in adolescents, the effect on migraine-related symptoms such as nausea and light sensitivity was not established in clinical trials. Almotriptan is not indicated for cluster headache or for hemiplegic or basilar migraine.
